Chinesco
Nayarit, West Mexico
200 BC to 300 AD
Ceramic
Height 8 1/2 inches, Width 6 3/4 inches
Provenance: Constance McCormick Fearing, Santa Barbara, California, before 1960
The figure sits in a hunched posture with a rounded back, one arm raised so the hand holds a small rounded pot near the side of the head, while the other arm bends with the hand resting on the knee. The face is smoothly modeled with closed or half closed eyes, a straight nose, and small disc shaped ear spools on either side. A dotted necklace band is rendered in cream slip around the neck, and the hair is textured with fine incised lines at the crown.
The body is rounded and compact, finished in a reddish orange slip with diagonal cream colored striping across the back and sides. A small cylindrical opening is set into the upper back near one shoulder, identifying the figure as a vessel. This hunched, pot holding pose is a recurring type within Chinesco figural production.
