Chinesco
Nayarit, Mexico
300–100 BC
Ceramic
Length 11 3/4"
Provenance: Cliff Baker, San Diego, CA; found together with a bird figure in the 1960s
This Chinesco effigy vessel from Nayarit takes the form of a shark, with a long tapering body, modeled pectoral fins, and a flared vessel mouth rising from the dorsal surface. The face is treated with incised decoration at the snout end, with applied eye bosses and incised details that give the head an unusually specific and individualized character. The redware surface shows considerable age patina with mottled dark areas across the body, and the vessel is in intact condition.
The piece was found in the 1960s together with a Chinesco bird effigy vessel, suggesting the two were deposited as a group. Marine animal effigies are less common than human or terrestrial animal forms within the Chinesco tradition, making this an unusual subject within the broader corpus of western Mexican shaft tomb ceramics. Both pieces were acquired from Cliff Baker of San Diego.
