$6,500.00

Chinookan (Wasco-Wishram), Columbia River

Sheep horn

Height 8½ in. (21.6 cm), width 4¾ in. (12.1 cm)

Provenance: Ray Snyder, Portland, Oregon

This sheep horn spoon was made by a Wasco-Wishram carver of the Columbia River, dating to the early 19th century or earlier. The Wasco and Wishram peoples occupied trade center villages along the Columbia River and produced carved horn objects of considerable sophistication. Sheep horn spoons of this form were prestige objects associated with feasting and ceremonial use.

The spoon is carved from a single piece of sheep horn with a long curved handle surmounted by a bear figure in the round. The ancient patina across the surface is consistent with early manufacture and sustained handling over generations. Its form, material, and figural handle place it within a recognized tradition of Columbia River horn carving.
