Bandolier bags were among the most labor-intensive and culturally significant objects produced by Ojibwe and Chippewa women of the Great Lakes region, worn by men on ceremonial occasions as displays of skill, wealth, and identity. This example is decorated with horses and damselflies, figurative subjects that appear in the beadwork vocabulary of the western Great Lakes tradition alongside floral and geometric motifs. At 31 inches including tassels and 8 1/2 inches wide the bag has the full scale associated with formal ceremonial examples rather than smaller decorative pieces.
