Chontal
Guerrero, Mexico
500 to 200 BC
Stone
Height 6 1/4 inches
Provenance: Scott Sharp, Cambridge, United Kingdom
The mask has a broad, irregular oval face with almond shaped eye openings cut through the stone. A ridged nose runs down the center of the face, above a horizontal slit forming the mouth. A small round raised area is present on the lower left cheek, and a single drilled hole appears near the upper left edge, likely for suspension.
The stone surface is coarse and weathered throughout, consistent with long term age and exposure. The overall form follows a simplified, oval treatment typical of Chontal masks from the Guerrero region. The mask was previously in the collection of Scott Sharp of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
