Māori Canoe Hurdle Race, New Zealand, Chromolithograph

$850.00

New Zealand

1920s

Chromolithograph

19 1/2 x 40 1/4 inches (49.5 x 102.2 cm) including frame

Provenance: Michael Graham Stewart, London

A canoe race is underway across a broad lake, the composition running the full width of the sheet with a long waka at the left crowded with spectators sitting shoulder to shoulder along its length. At the center a canoe has been driven up almost vertically out of the water, its crew spilling over the side while a man in a yellow shirt paddles hard alongside and others swim clear, and further canoes and a small sailing boat are scattered across the middle distance. Beyond them the far shore rises to a low bush covered hill with columns of white steam drifting up from the ground in several places, and the water and sky are carried in soft greens and pale blue that flatten the distance. The image is signed at the lower right.
