Forty figures mounted in original frame
Provenance: Jean Charlot (1898 to 1979), muralist active in Mexico during the 1920s, later a professor at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii
This collection consists of forty small ceramic figures and heads, mounted together on a fabric backed board within the original wood frame. The pieces vary widely in scale, color, and style, ranging from small mask like heads to fuller standing figures with modeled arms and legs. Surface tones range from pale buff and cream to reddish brown and dark gray fired clay.
Several figures include applied or incised details such as headdresses, jewelry, and facial markings, reflecting a range of Preclassic Mexican figural traditions including Chupicuaro and Tlatilco. The frame and mounting appear original and remain intact as assembled. The collection was formerly held by Jean Charlot, a muralist who worked in Mexico in the 1920s before settling in Honolulu, Hawaii as a University of Hawaii professor.
