Circle of Guercino, Sibyl Drawing, Red Charcoal and Wash

$3,500.00

Italy

17th century

Red charcoal and wash on paper, framed

Image 6 × 7 in. (15.2 × 17.8 cm); framed 15 × 16 in. (38.1 × 40.6 cm)

Provenance: Private Massachusetts collection

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino, was one of the foremost draughtsmen of the Italian Baroque, and his depictions of sibyls, prophetesses of the ancient world absorbed into Christian iconographic tradition, were among his most repeated and influential subjects. This drawing in red charcoal and wash, attributed to the circle of Guercino, shows a sibyl in three-quarter view within an oval format, the warm red medium and fluid wash technique consistent with the Bolognese drawing tradition in which Guercino's workshop operated. The oval composition and the figure's meditative pose are characteristic of the sibyl type as developed in the Guercino circle.

The framed presentation in a period-style mount preserves the drawing in good condition, with the red charcoal and wash retaining warmth and tonal range. Private Massachusetts collection provenance connects the piece to a New England collecting tradition with documented engagement with Old Master works on paper.
