Cochiti Pueblo Stone Fetish with Beaded Pouch

$4,800.00

Cochiti Pueblo, New Mexico

19th century

Length 4 inches

Provenance: Ray Dewey, Santa Fe, New Mexico

A carved fetish of the nineteenth century, retained with the decorated pouch in which it was kept, the pairing of figure and container being the part that so rarely survives, since pouches were personal and were usually separated from their contents long before an object reached the market. Fetishes at Cochiti were held by individuals and by societies, fed with cornmeal and kept wrapped between uses, and the pouch is therefore not an accessory to the carving but the other half of how the object was actually used and understood.
