Colima Acrobatic Effigy Vessel with Everted Rim

$3,600.00

Colima

West Mexico

100 BC to 250 AD

Ceramic

Length 11 inches, Height 7 1/2 inches, Width 7 inches

Provenance: Martin Family collection, New York and Florida; Henri L. Schouten, Netherlands and Longboat Key, Florida, 1986 to 1994; Old Dutch collection, 1960s

The vessel takes the form of a male figure bent backward with both hands and feet planted on the ground, forming an arch that supports a cylindrical neck with an everted rim. The head is turned to one side with an open mouth, a rounded ear, and a closed eye, while the opposite end shows a raised hand near the front legs. A band of small conical elements encircles the neck area, consistent with a row of shell tinklers worn at the waist.

The ceramic surface is burnished and shows a mottled reddish brown tone throughout, with darker patches consistent with manganese dioxide blooms. The four legs are rounded and slightly bent, planting the body firmly above the ground. The piece is intact, with the everted rim opening providing access to the vessel interior.
