Mexico, Colima, Autlan style
100 BC–250 AD
Ceramic with painted surface
Height: 7½ in (19.1 cm)
Provenance: Maurice Yanez Collection, Pasadena, California; Berg Collection
The Autlan style is a regional variant within the broader Colima ceramic tradition of West Mexico, produced in the southern Colima zone and distinguished by its simplified, geometric forms and unusually strong surface presence. Autlan figures display a distinctive regional character within the shaft tomb ceramic traditions, with a directness of modeling and an economy of ornamental detail that sets them apart from the more elaborate Jalisco and Nayarit types produced in the same period. The painted surface treatment on examples of this type, where preserved, adds a further layer of visual complexity to what is already a formally resolved ceramic type.
This large Autlan figure displays the simplified, frontal form characteristic of the style, with a broad face, defined features, and a painted surface that retains coverage across the head and upper body. The unusual presence and scale of the figure, combined with the painted treatment and the two-owner California provenance, make this a solid representative example of a type less commonly encountered than the mainstream Colima dog or warrior figure traditions.
