Colima
West Mexico
200–100 BC
Ceramic
Height 5 1/2"; Length 11 1/2"
Provenance: Clifford Baker, Los Angeles, CA, obtained in the 1960s
This large Colima dog vessel is modeled in a curled, rolling pose with the body twisted so the hind legs extend to one side while the head and forequarters rise and turn upward, with the mouth open and the head thrown back. A wide flared vessel mouth rises from the center of the back, and a small tail curls at the rear. The surface is a deep grey-brown, darker than the standard Colima redware type, with a burnished finish and dark fire clouding distributed across the body.
The curled or rolling pose, with the body in a dynamic twisted position, is among the less common variants in the Colima dog tradition and differs markedly from the more static seated or standing types. The darker surface color of this piece, distinct from the warm red-brown of most Colima dogs, reflects variation in firing conditions and clay body that occurs across the corpus. The piece comes from Clifford Baker of Los Angeles with pre-1970 provenance.
