Colima, West Mexico
Protoclassic period, 100 BC to 250 AD
Ceramic
Height 9 ½ in (24.1 cm), Length 8 in (20.3 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Southern California, 1960s; Jim Bodispaugh Gallery, Berkeley, California, 1970s; private collection, San Diego, California
The dog sits low on its haunches with the forelegs braced forward and the head swung sharply to one side, the muzzle carried past the shoulder. A wide flaring spout rises from the crown between the ears, which are pinched to points and set back against the head. The eyes are ringed and raised, the nose is modeled as a heavy pad, and the mouth is drawn open on a long banded row of teeth.
The surface carries a dense network of fine branching mineral deposits, dark manganese laid down in dendritic patterns across the head, back, and legs during long burial in the tomb. Beneath this the red slip remains burnished and glossy, showing through in patches along the shoulder, the near foreleg, and the flank. The form is intact with the spout rim whole and the paws and ears free of loss.
