Colima
West Mexico
100 BC–250 AD
Ceramic
Height 3 3/4"; Length 6 1/2"
Provenance: Roy Oswalt, Scottsdale, AZ
This Colima dog vessel depicts an emaciated animal in a curled, crouching pose with the head resting low and turned slightly, the mouth closed, and small round ears flattened against the head. Incised parallel lines across the shoulders, back, and flanks render the ribs and musculature of a lean body, a treatment specific to the emaciated type within the Colima dog tradition. The surface is a deep burnished red-brown with darker areas throughout, and the piece is compact and low to the ground.
The emaciated dog is a recognized variant within the Colima corpus, distinct from the full-bodied standard type, and has been interpreted as a representation of the skeletal or sacrificed dog associated with the underworld journey in ancient Mesoamerican belief. The incised ribbing that defines this type is rendered here with consistent detail across the full body surface. The piece comes from the collection of Roy Oswalt of Scottsdale, Arizona.
