Colima
West Mexico
300 BC to 300 AD
Ceramic
Height 11 1/4 inches
Provenance: Dr. Richard Gill, Florida; Art for Eternity, New York
The figure is seated with one arm raised, the hand open with the fingers curled as though in a gesture, while the other arm forms a loop resting down toward the lap. The head is topped with a pointed cap decorated with an incised woven pattern that wraps diagonally around the crown, with an opening set into the back of the cap. The face shows narrow eyes, a broad nose, a closed smiling mouth, round ear ornaments, and a raised hump across the upper back.
A V shaped collar is carved across the chest below the neck, following the line of the shoulders. The figure sits cross legged with the torso rounded and full, the feet resting flat at the base. The ceramic surface is burnished to a reddish brown tone with lighter mottled patches visible across the body.
