Colima
West Mexico
100 BC–250 AD
Ceramic
Height 4"; Length 8"
Provenance: Roy Oswalt, Scottsdale, AZ
This Colima redware dog lies in a recumbent pose with front legs extended forward, head raised and turned slightly, mouth open with incised teeth visible, and a small horn rising from between the upright ears. The tail curves upward at the rear, and the burnished red-brown surface is clean and even with minimal fire clouding, giving this example a particularly uniform tone compared to more mottled pieces of the type. The eye is clearly modeled on the visible side of the face, and the overall form is compact and low to the ground.
The recumbent pose — with the body fully horizontal and the head raised — is a recognized variant within the Colima dog tradition and differs from both the seated and standing types. The horn element, as on other Colima dogs, has been interpreted as a marker of supernatural or ritual status within ancient West Mexican belief. The piece comes from the collection of Roy Oswalt of Scottsdale, Arizona.
