Colima Seated Dog with Bared Teeth and Erect Ears

$6,500.00

Colima, West Mexico

Protoclassic period, 100 BC to 250 AD

Ceramic

Height 14 in (35.6 cm), Length 15 ¾ in (40 cm)

Provenance: San Diego, California trade; Andy and Von Long, Denver, Colorado, trustees of the Denver Art Museum, acquired in the 1960s

The dog sits square on its haunches with the forelegs straight and the head lifted and turned slightly, the muzzle raised. The mouth is modeled open to show a full row of small teeth in both jaws, the tongue held flat and the lips defined as a thick rolled edge. The ears are large and erect with hollowed inner faces, and the eyes are set as lidded almond forms above a broad snout.

The body is built with heavy volume through the chest and the hindquarters, the shoulder and haunch given as smooth swelling masses with the paws blocked out simply at the front. The red slip is burnished to a deep even gloss across the back and flanks, with fine dark speckling gathered across the chest where mineral deposits have settled into the surface. Wear shows as pale abrasion along the raised edges of the ears, the muzzle, and the toes, consistent with age and handling.
