Colima
West Mexico
300 BC to 300 AD
Ceramic
Height 13 3/4 inches, Width 8 1/2 inches
Provenance: Miles and Shirley Fiterman, Minneapolis, Minnesota, acquired during the late 1960s
The figure sits cross legged with both hands resting on the knees, a posture common to Colima seated figures from West Mexico. The head rises into a tall conical form with a hollow opening at the crown, indicating the piece was made as a vessel. Wide flanged ears frame a face with almond shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and a closed mouth.
A raised band encircles the neck in the manner of a collar or necklace, and a small depression marks the navel at the center of the abdomen. The ceramic surface is burnished to a smooth reddish brown finish, with lighter buff tones visible across the face. The figure remains intact, with both feet planted flat against the base to support the seated pose.
