Colima
West Mexico
300 BC to 300 AD
Ceramic
Height 15 1/4 inches, Width 9 1/4 inches
Provenance: Joshua Dimondstein, Los Angeles, California; Al Rettis, Beverly Hills, California, attorney to Ed Merrin; Ed Merrin, New York
The figure is seated with looped arms that curve from the shoulders down to rest against the lap, a form sometimes called an admiral figure in West Mexican ceramic studies. A scalloped collar of three rounded lobes covers the chest below a face with narrow closed eyes, a broad nose, and pierced ears. The head rises into a tall pointed form topped with a small knob, with a horizontal band of vertical line incising set below it.
The surface displays two tones, with a burnished reddish orange slip contrasting against darker mottled patches produced during firing. Flanged extensions project outward from each shoulder, echoing the curve of the arms below. The figure is seated cross legged, with small rounded feet visible at the base.
