Colima Standing Musician Figure, Mexico

$14,000.00

West Mexico, Colima

Circa 100 BC to 250 AD

Ceramic

Height: 14 in, Width: 8¼ in

Provenance: Susan Schroeder, Los Angeles, California, acquired in the 1960s

This red orange pottery figure depicts a standing musician holding a rattle in both hands, extended forward in a fixed, ceremonial pose. The figure wears a wide brimmed hat secured with a chin strap, large flared ring bracelets at the ankles, a wide incised body band, and a loincloth with a large rear panel and three flaps, all decorated with finely incised interlocking diamond textile patterning. The smiling expression and closed, trance like eyes are consistent with figures associated with ritual or ceremonial performance within the Colima tradition.

The surface retains strong mineral deposits consistent with long burial. Both legs have been reattached, with restoration visible along the break lines, and there is a minor chip to the brim of the hat. The incised textile patterning across the body band and loincloth reflects the careful attention Colima artists gave to costume and adornment in figures of this scale.
