Corinthian Black-Figure Amphora, Animal Frieze

$4,800.00

Ceramic
Circa 500 BC
Height 7 1/2"; Diameter 8 1/4"
Provenance: Fortuna Fine Art, New York, NY; Palmyra Heritage, New York, NY

This Corinthian amphora is painted in the black-figure technique with two horizontal registers of animal decoration encircling the body. The upper frieze depicts a lion and a deer in procession, separated by rosette fill ornaments characteristic of Corinthian workshop production. The lower register carries a frieze of winged creatures, rendered with incised detail against the orange ground, above a band of pendant rays at the base of the vessel.

The rounded body, slightly squared rim, and twin vertical handles follow established Corinthian vessel conventions of the late Archaic period. Corinthian pottery was among the most widely exported ceramic ware in the Greek world during the seventh and sixth centuries BC, and the animal frieze style associated with it remained influential well beyond the region's production centers. The vessel is in stable condition and displays well at its scale.
