Atlantic Watershed culture
Costa Rica
300 to 800 AD
Stone
Height 8 inches, Width 7 1/2 inches, Depth 5 1/2 inches
Provenance: Andre Fourquet, Paris
The finial is carved in the form of a stylized animal head, with two broad, flared projections extending outward from the top corners in place of ears. The face features deep, hollow eye sockets on either side of a raised central ridge that runs down to a tapering muzzle. Fine vertical grooves are carved along the sides of the nose area.
The stone surface is coarse and pitted, with a weathered gray brown patina consistent with long term burial exposure. The eye sockets are currently empty, though their depth and shape suggest they may originally have held an inlaid material. The piece is mounted on a metal stand and was previously in the collection of Andre Fourquet in Paris.
