An oval face mask carved from a single block of wood, with a high domed forehead, a narrow tapering chin, and a straight ridged nose. The eyes are cut as narrow horizontal slits beneath arched brows, the lips are full and parted around an open rectangular slot, and grooved parallel lines follow the hairline at each temple. Slit eyed masks of this form are known among the Dan as deangle, associated with gentleness and with roles in initiation and entertainment. The reverse is hollowed with the adze and pierced with a row of small holes at regular intervals around the full perimeter, the fittings by which a costume of cloth and fiber would have been attached. The mask is presented on a custom black metal display stand.
