Crow Beaded Buffalo Hide Moccasins, Geometric Bands

$3,400.00

Crow, northern Plains

1870

Buffalo hide, glass beads, sinew

Length 10 1/2" (26.7 cm)

Provenance: Jim Jeter, Santa Barbara, CA

Crow beaded moccasins of the 1870s are among the most accomplished examples of Plains footwear, the geometric beadwork laid in horizontal bands across the vamp and sole in a composition that is distinctly Crow in its organization and color approach. The Crow tradition favored banded geometric designs in strong contrasting colors, the horizontal registers creating a visual rhythm across the foot that differs from the more centrally composed vamp designs of neighboring Plains traditions. Moccasins from the pre-reservation period of the 1870s represent the height of Crow beadwork production, before the material disruptions of the reservation era altered the conditions under which women's decorative work was produced.

This pair is beaded across the vamp and sole in horizontal bands of geometric patterning in teal blue, white, red, dark brown, and ochre tones, sinew-sewn on buffalo hide with the worn upper forming a cuff at the ankle. The banded composition is consistent and well executed across both moccasins, the beadwork dense and even. Provenance traces to Jim Jeter of Santa Barbara, California.
