Crow Sinew-Backed Bow and Turkey Feather Arrow

$2,100.00

Crow, northern Plains

1850s

Wood, sinew, turkey vulture feathers

Bow length 45" (114.3 cm); arrow length 24" (61 cm)

Provenance: Dave Hrachovy, Lake Arrowhead, CA

The Crow were renowned among Plains peoples for the quality of their bows, which were frequently sinew-backed to increase draw weight and range, the laminated construction allowing a shorter bow better suited to use on horseback. Arrows fletched with turkey vulture feathers were produced across the Plains, the feathers selected for their aerodynamic consistency and durability over multiple uses. Bows and arrows of this period from named Plains nations represent objects produced during the height of Plains warrior and hunting culture, before the reservation era fundamentally altered the material life of these communities.

This bow retains its sinew backing and has developed a well-used patina consistent with active field use, the wood surface smooth and darkened through sustained handling. The arrow is fletched with turkey vulture feathers and retains its point, presenting the set as a complete and coherent hunting implement. Provenance traces to Dave Hrachovy of Lake Arrowhead, California.
