Cusco School
Peru
18th century
Oil on canvas
Height 19 1/2 inches, width 15 inches
Provenance: Acquired from an antique shop in Dinard, France
This oil on canvas depicts the Madonna and Child, the Virgin seated in a deep red robe trimmed and patterned in gold, wearing a rayed halo and drop earrings, her head inclined toward the child in her arm. The Christ Child, also haloed, is partly wrapped in a gray blue cloth and turns to reach toward her. A dense border of painted flowers in rose, gray, and muted red surrounds the figures against a dark ground, and gilt detailing runs across the robe.
The surface carries heavy craquelure throughout, with areas of wear and some paint loss consistent with age. The gilt brocade robe, floral border, and dark ground are features associated with the Cusco school of colonial Peru. The painting is offered on its canvas in the present condition as shown.
