$1,350.00

Cuzco school, Peru
19th century

Oil on canvas

Height 16.5" (41.9 cm) x Width 11.75" (29.8 cm) x Depth 0.75" (1.9 cm)

Provenance: Dr. Peter Furst, Albany

The Virgin of the Candelaria, patron saint of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, was one of the most widely venerated Marian subjects in colonial Latin America, her feast celebrated on 2 February to honor the purification of the Virgin forty days after the birth of the Christ Child. This Cuzco school oil on canvas depicts her in the frontal, hieratic manner characteristic of the tradition, the Virgin holding a candle and the Christ Child, her figure elaborated with the richly embroidered and lace-trimmed vestments that are hallmarks of Cuzco Marian iconography. The warm palette and gilded surface treatment reflect the continuing vitality of the Cuzco painting tradition into the 19th century.

The canvas is in untouched condition, retaining its original paint surface without restoration or overpainting, which gives it particular integrity as a document of Cuzco school technique and material practice. The surface shows the fine craquelure and tonal depth characteristic of period Cuzco work, and the composition is well-preserved with strong legibility throughout. The work comes from the collection of Dr. Peter Furst of Albany, a distinguished anthropologist and collector of Latin American material culture.
