This cyanotype by Edward S. Curtis depicts a dancer identified as part of the Summer Ceremony. The sitter is shown wearing a headdress and a Chilkat-style blanket, with the figure presented frontally against the soft tonal field of the cyanotype process. The Kwakwaka’wakw, historically referred to in many early sources as Kwakiutl, are a Northwest Coast people of coastal British Columbia. Curtis photographed ceremonial subjects from this region in 1914, producing images that documented dress, masks, and ceremonial presentation. This example is connected to the Christopher Cardozo collection, a major modern collection of Curtis material.
