Dan — Liberia
Mid-20th century or earlier
Wood
Height: 19¼ in (48.9 cm)
Provenance: Vincent Price, Los Angeles, CA
Among Dan communities of Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire, large ceremonial ladles known as wunkirmian were associated with feasts and with women honored for exceptional generosity, functioning as emblems of status and spiritual capacity rather than utilitarian objects. This example is carved with a deep oval bowl and a long handle surmounted by a finely modeled female head with calm, balanced features, a high coiffure, and an elongated neck. The head and bowl work together as a unified ceremonial form of notable sculptural refinement.
The piece was formerly in the collection of Vincent Price, Los Angeles, whose holdings of African and pre-Columbian art were among the most significant assembled by an American collector during the mid-twentieth century.
