Dirk Langendjik, Landscape with Classical Ruins and Blacksmith

$4,500.00

Netherlands

18th century

Watercolor over pencil on heavy cream wove paper

18¼ × 22½ in. (46.4 × 57.2 cm)

Provenance: Swann Galleries, January 29, 2013, Lot 176

Dirk Langendjik (1748–1805) was a Dutch draughtsman, painter, and etcher who produced depictions of land and sea battles, military scenes from the Dutch Patriottentijd, and subjects from the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. This watercolor over pencil depicts a landscape with classical ruins and a blacksmith, combining the picturesque ruin tradition with a genre figure in a manner consistent with Dutch and Flemish landscape practice of the later eighteenth century. The heavy cream wove paper support and the watercolor and pencil technique are well suited to the atmospheric qualities of the composition.

The Swann Galleries auction provenance from 2013 provides a fully documented market record for the work and places it within the category of Dutch works on paper with verified sale history.
