New Zealand, Māori text printed in Sydney

1833

Printed broadside

Height: 18 in (45.7 cm); Width: 15¼ in (38.7 cm)

Provenance: Paul Kahn, San Francisco, California

This early Māori Christian Bible printing presents Matthew 19:13–15 under the English title “Children brought to Christ” and the Māori title “Ka mau-ria nga ta-ma-ri-ki ki Te Ka-rai-ti.” Printed by William Jones in Sydney in 1833, it belongs to the early history of Māori-language religious printing connected with missionary education. The sheet was presumably made for use in Church Mission Society schools, where translated biblical texts formed part of printed teaching material.

The single-sheet format gave the text a public and instructional function, suitable for display, reading, or classroom use. Its bilingual wording records the early adaptation of Christian biblical material into printed Māori, at a moment when orthography and translation were still developing through missionary networks. The reference in Williams, A Bibliography of Printed Maori to 1900, supports its place within the documented record of early Māori printing.
