The panel shows a cowboy in profile in a broad pale hat, rose-red shirt, and blue neckerchief, mounted and looking right across an open range. The paint is handled in broad loaded strokes with the board's tone working through the sky and ground, in the manner of a plein air sketch, and the palette runs warm from the tan grassland to the red of the shirt. It is signed at the lower right and presented in a period frame.
Edgar Martin Keller was born at Crescent City, California, and worked as a painter, etcher, illustrator, and teacher. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, worked as a sheet music illustrator for M. Witmark and Sons in New York, and turned fully to painting around 1907, exhibiting in the East before settling in Southern California, where he showed at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915 and co-founded the Modern Art Society of Los Angeles in 1916. His paintings of the California coast, redwoods, and western subjects appear regularly at auction.
