Electrotype Copies of Ancient Greek Coins, Dr. George Tate

$6,500.00

Europe

19th century

Electrotype copies, in original period frame

18½ × 21 in. (47 × 53.3 cm) framed

Provenance: Alistair McAlpine, Baron McAlpine of West Green, London

Electrotype copies of ancient coins were produced in the nineteenth century as scholarly and educational objects, allowing study and display of rare Greek numismatic types without access to originals. Dr. George Tate was among the specialists who produced such sets for distribution to collectors, universities, and learned institutions across Europe, and this framed collection presents a broad selection of ancient Greek coin types arranged for display, the electrotype process faithfully reproducing the relief and detail of the originals. The provenance through Alistair McAlpine, Baron McAlpine of West Green, connects the collection to one of the most significant British private collectors of the late twentieth century, whose holdings spanned antiquities, decorative arts, and numismatic material, giving objects from his collection a clear and distinguished ownership history.
