A fede ring with clasped hands, a form associated with love, fidelity, betrothal, and marriage. The design, known from the Italian mani in fede, or “hands joined in faith,” has roots in Roman marriage symbolism and continued through the medieval and Renaissance periods. This example is accompanied by an old ink label reading “Wedding or Betrothal Ring of Elizabeth. Time of Q. Elizabeth (?)”, preserving an earlier collector’s attribution to the Elizabethan period.
