Oval plate 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches (5.7 x 8.9 cm), round plate 2 1/2 inches diameter (6.4 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Albuquerque, New Mexico
Two Federal brass plates, the larger an oval waist belt plate cast with the raised letters US, the smaller a round eagle breast plate showing the bird with wings spread, arrows and lightning in one claw and an olive branch in the other. Both are mounted on a velvet covered board with a handwritten paper label beneath them reading FEDERAL BUCKLES PLOWED UP ON WILDERNESS BATTLE FIELD VIRGINIA 1939, written by the farmer who turned them up. The Wilderness was fought across two days in May 1864 in dense second growth woodland west of Fredericksburg, the opening engagement of Grant's Overland Campaign against Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, and the ground was worked as farmland long afterward.
