Fiji
18th century
Wood
Length 15 1/2 in. (39.4 cm)
Provenance: London Trade
The ula is a short throwing club specific to Fiji, distinguished from the longer Fijian war clubs by its compact form and weighted bulbous head designed for accuracy in use. Examples dating to the 18th century represent the earliest stratum of Fijian material culture in Western collections, acquired during the period of early European contact and exchange in the Pacific. This example measures 15 1/2 inches, consistent with the standard fighting length for the type.
The surface carries incised marks and a patina consistent with age and use. The ula form is among the most immediately recognizable objects in the Oceanic collecting field, and 18th-century examples are distinguished by the depth and character of their surface relative to later production.
