The beater is cut from a single length of dense hardwood, square in section along its working head and turning to a round tapered handle that finishes in a slight swell at the butt. Each face of the head is cut with close parallel ribs running the full length, the ridges standing sharp on some faces and worn down to a smooth rounded profile on others where the tool was used hardest. The wood has darkened to a deep reddish brown with a hard polished surface across the handle, and one end of the head shows pale crushing and a shallow loss where the fibers have broken away under repeated impact.
