England
Circa 1915
Pencil on paper
Height 7 3/4 inches (19.7 cm), width 10 inches (25.4 cm)
Provenance: P. Boyd Carpenter, London
Four drawings of biplanes, each worked in pencil and each taking a different view of the aircraft, one a side elevation with the wing struts and control cables drawn out individually, one a three quarter view from above and behind with the engine and cockpit opening described in detail, and the others angled to show the nose and the undercarriage. The draughtsmanship is technical rather than pictorial, the wing ribs and bracing wires counted out and the fuselage framing carried through where it would be hidden by fabric. Two of the sheets carry handwritten annotations across the drawing, with leader lines running from the notes to the parts they describe, and one has a block of writing set beneath the aircraft.
The paper has toned to a warm cream and carries the creases, edge tears, and small losses of sheets that were worked on and handled rather than kept flat in a folder. The drawings are not uniform in finish, one being carried much further in shading and detail than the others, which is consistent with a working sequence rather than a presentation set. They are offered as a group of four.
