Gilt metal with agate cabochon
1.5 x 2.25 inches (4 x 6 cm)
Private collection, Hilo, Hawaii
The Art Nouveau sash pin is worked in gilt metal as a ribboned cartouche of scrolling acanthus and whiplash curves, centered on an oval banded agate cabochon in grey and white shot with orange. It is signed by George N. Steere and retains its pin fitting on the reverse, with rubbing to the gilding at the high points and along the lower edge. The date and signature place it in the last years of the Art Nouveau taste in American jewelry.
