This German Baroque cherub or putto is carved in gesso and paint, the figure rendered with the rounded, animated quality characteristic of German Rococo decorative sculpture in the mid-eighteenth century. The raised arm, tilted head, and flowing drapery across the lower body are conventions of the putto type as developed in German Catholic church decoration during the Baroque and Rococo periods, when cherub figures were used extensively in altar and ceiling compositions. At 13 1/2 inches this is a substantial figure with strong sculptural presence.

The certificate of authenticity and the documented acquisition from Tanja Karl Kunst Antiquitaten in Blaibach, Germany in 2010 provide a clear and verifiable ownership sequence. The Santa Fe, New Mexico provenance through the Coffin collection connects this piece to the serious Southwest collector market for European decorative arts. German Rococo cherub figures of this quality and scale are genuine survivals of the eighteenth century church interior tradition.
