This Graeco-Roman stucco mask depicts a young male face with finely modeled features, including deeply set eyes beneath articulated brows, a straight nose, and parted lips rendered with considerable naturalism. Traces of the original polychrome pigment remain across the surface, preserved beneath areas of white ground, and the hair is carved in sweeping relief with darkened residue surviving in the recesses.
The mask is presented on its original 1940s velvet wall mount, which adds period context and contributes to the overall display dimensions of 10 1/2" x 9". Stucco portrait masks of this type were produced across the Graeco-Roman world for funerary and architectural use, and the survival of both original pigment and a pre-1940 private collection provenance from New York makes this an unusually well-documented example.
