Group of Mexican Illustrated Bills of Sale Invoices

$1,500.00

Mexico

1890 to 1920

Ink and letterpress on paper

Provenance: Paul Kahn, San Francisco, CA

This is a group of forty eight Mexican commercial bills of sale and invoices dating from about 1890 to 1920, issued by hardware dealers, tailors, and other merchants across Mexico. Each sheet is headed with an engraved letterhead vignette naming the firm, such as La Mexicana and La Asturiana, and many retain their revenue stamps, handwritten entries, and signatures. Together they document the design of Mexican commercial stationery and the everyday transactions of shops and warehouses during the Porfiriato and the revolutionary years.

The engraved headings range from ornate lettering to small illustrations of storefronts, machinery, and trade emblems, giving the group value as a record of period graphic design. The papers vary in size and color, from ledger sheets to printed billheads, and show the wear and folds of documents kept in business files. As a set they offer a broad view of Mexican commerce at the turn of the century rather than a single transaction.
