The three pie crimpers are carved from ivory, each with a fluted wheel turning at the head of a worked handle, one handle pierced with openwork, one carved in crosshatch, and one finished with a shaped terminal. The wheels turn on ivory pins and the surfaces carry honey toning with the small age cracks natural to the material. Each is a complete working form, the crimping edges crisp.
Pie crimpers, or jagging wheels, were among the most elaborate forms whaling crewmen carved at sea, made as gifts for the household and worked with the pierced and sculptural detail that shows the carver's skill. They were used to trim and seal pastry edges, and survive as one of the characteristic forms of American scrimshaw. Offered as a group of three as acquired.
