Antigua, Guatemala
Circa 1900
Wood, gesso, polychrome and glass eyes
Height 7 1/2" Width 7"
Provenance: Peter Furst, Albany, NY
Carved from a single block and finished in gesso and polychrome, the mask presents the bearded Spaniard danced in the highland Guatemalan mask cycles, his full moustache and a beard tapering to a pair of carved curls at the chin. The hair is worked in tight scrolling locks across the brow, then swept back in long combed strands over the temples, painted a soft blue-grey against the pale flesh tone of the face. Inset glass eyes with amber irises sit beneath arched brows, and the ears, lips and nostrils carry a strong red. The reverse is hollowed to the contour of the face, cut for wear.
