Haere Mai New Zealand Maori Travel Poster, 1930s

New Zealand 1930s

Lithograph on paper, archival frame Height 40.75" (103.5 cm), Width 26" (66 cm) including archival frame

Provenance: Paul Kahn, San Francisco, CA

This poster was produced in the 1930s as part of New Zealand's government-sponsored tourism campaign, promoting travel by ocean liner and rail to international visitors. The image depicts two Maori figures in traditional dress against a geothermal landscape, with the Maori greeting "Haere Mai" (Welcome) prominently displayed. Posters of this period were printed in small runs for display in travel agencies, shipping offices, and railway stations, and surviving originals are significantly scarcer than the mass-produced reproductions that circulate today.

This is an original lithograph, not a reproduction. The image is printed with the characteristic color saturation and registration of period chromolithography, distinct from the flat digital output of modern reprints. It is presented in an archival frame appropriate to its age and condition.
