Argillite
Height 3 3/4 in / 9.5 cm; Length 11 3/4 in / 29.8 cm
Provenance: B. Henderson, Olympia, Washington
Attributed to John Cross (1867–1939)
This Haida argillite pipe is attributed to John Cross, a Haida artist associated with Chaatl and Skidegate on Haida Gwaii. Cross was known for work in argillite, wood, gold, and silver, and belonged to the same late 19th- and early 20th-century artistic world as Charles Edenshaw and Tom Price. Argillite pipes of this period were made within a strong Haida carving tradition while also serving an active collecting and trade market.
The pipe is carved with a dense arrangement of figures and formline details across the body, with the bowl and stem integrated into the sculptural design. The polished black argillite allows the carving to hold crisp surfaces, rounded volumes, and incised detail within a compact horizontal form. The attribution to John Cross should be retained as an attribution, giving the object a significant artist connection while avoiding an unsupported absolute claim.
