Haida, Skidegate (Chaatl), Haida Gwaii
Argillite
Height 3¾ in. (9.5 cm), length 11¾ in. (29.8 cm)
Provenance: B. Henderson, Olympia, Washington
This argillite trade pipe is attributed to John Cross (1867–1939), a master carver of Skidegate on Haida Gwaii, working circa 1900. Cross was a carver of gold and silver jewelry as well as argillite and wood, well known for his totem poles and a contemporary of Charles Edenshaw and Tom Price. His work is held in museums and important private collections worldwide.
The pipe features densely packed figural imagery carved with precision into the black stone, consistent with the high standard of Cross's known output. Argillite pipes of this quality were produced for the outside trade market beginning in the mid-19th century, with the finest examples attributed to named artists commanding significant collector attention. The surface retains the deep polish characteristic of well-handled argillite.
