Haida Potlatch Horn Spoon, Formline Human, Animal Figures

$3,750.00

Haida, Northwest Coast

Horn

Height 15½ in. (39.4 cm), width 3⅞ in. (9.8 cm)

Provenance: The Stanley Miller Collection of Native American Art

This Haida potlatch horn spoon was constructed in two sections, with a plain bowl joined to a handle carved with complex formline human and animal elements. Horn spoons of this scale were prestige objects used in feasting contexts, where the quality and imagery of serving ware reflected the rank and crest rights of the host. A small paper collection label verso inscribed 224 adds to its documented history.

The handle carving integrates human and animal figures within a formline composition of considerable density and skill. The contrast between the smooth, warm horn bowl and the darkly carved handle gives the object strong visual presence. Its scale and the complexity of its figural program place it among the more ambitious examples of Haida horn spoon carving from the 1870s.
