Haida, Northwest Coast
1970s
Sterling silver
Circumference 7 inches (17.8 cm), gap 1 3/8 inches (3.5 cm), width 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico
The cuff is engraved with an eagle rendered in formline, the head worked at the center of the band with a large ovoid eye on either side and a downturned beak beneath, and the wing forms carried outward across the width to the terminals. The engraver has used a fine crosshatched ground and rows of scalloped feather marks to fill the negative spaces, leaving the formlines polished and raised against a darkened field. The band is heavy gauge sterling with a broad face and cleanly finished edges.
