Hawaii, United States
1920s
Hand-colored photograph, period frame
12 x 18 in (30.5 x 45.7 cm), including frame
Provenance: Joyal Arnold, Honolulu, Hawaii
Hand-colored photographs of Hawaiian landscapes were produced commercially and by independent photographers throughout the territorial period, serving as souvenirs, decorative objects, and documents of the islands before color photography became standard. Kailua Beach on the Kona coast of Hawaii Island was among the most photographed Hawaiian subjects of the period, its combination of palm trees, white sand, and coastal light making it a recurring subject for both professional and amateur photographers working in Hawaii from the 1900s onward. Examples in original period frames with intact hand-coloring and good color retention are less commonly encountered than bare prints.
This photograph is presented in its original period frame with mat, the hand-coloring applied in the warm greens, browns, and tans characteristic of 1920s Hawaiian photographic colorist work. The image depicts a palm-lined coastal path or beach approach with the characteristic Kona landscape visible in the background. The Honolulu provenance through Joyal Arnold gives the piece a clear single-owner local collecting history.
